And if so, what is in lower carat gold apart from gold?

24 karat gold is, by definition, pure gold. Pure gold is very soft and would quickly wear, dent and bend in normal usage so it is mixed with another metal to improve its wear resistance. The other metal is often silver, sometimes copper (red gold) and in such alloys the maximum fineness is 22 karat, i.e 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metal.

The melting point of pure gold is somewhere in the region of 1000 C, under no circumstances could it melt in your hand, unless you were holding it in a furnace! It would, however, be soft enough to be marked with a fingernail or distorted by hand strength if the piece was a couple of inches long and not too thick.

no- 24 carat gold is 99.99% gold. You cant get pure gold but apparently, you could mould it with your hands if it was pure

No one would guarantee pure gold so techinically there is no such thing........

Other metals are bound to mixed in somewhere along the line.........22 carat is the best you can get..........

but it is very soft though

yes it is the purest form of gold.but mostly the jewellery is made of 22k gold as 24k gold is very delicate and could break away.if u r planning to buy 24k gold then go for coins or gold biscuits rather than jewelley.

All the best!

I'm not sure, because i've been told that pure gold can almost melt in your hand, and that is why it is always mixed with other base metals to stop this from happening.

i think 24 is pure, anything less is mixed with other metals. b'cos its the purest its also the sofest - very malleable and prob not great for everyday wear jewellery.
