it was all my idea,,
but then british gas came along and nicked the idea off me,,, so ive never seen a penny since!!!! booo

seriously though, i dont really know, it started way before i was even an apple in my mommys eye's!!!!

Good question..I suppose it must have started as a by product of the production of coke for the steel industry in the 1840's in Britain

Niall you have your facts right except the time it was used in homes and it was much later i would think but definitely well before 1900s
