Find stuff to do on your own, so that when he's looking over your shoulder, you don't have to be paranoid. I have a total b itch for a boss, and days like yesterday, when it was dead (I work in an staffing office), I cleaned and rearranged my front desk area, and will be taking out a part of the desk today. It's something that needed to be done, and I had nothing to do. And when the b itch of a boss asked what I was doing I told her, and she got this little smile on her face... she's knows that I am someone who will always find something to do rather then f'ing off all day... no matter how big of a b itch she may be.

You can look for something else. It may be a gravy job but if you are on edge all day then what is the point. You need a job outline and some direction. He sounds like a crappy boss so you need to address this.

We all have those.. mine gives me lecture every five minutes about something or other... I just choose to ignore it. I get my job done the best way that I can. there are days when I sit around for a few hours with nothing to do... I ask too but when he gets on my case I just tell him why didn't you tell me earlier when I asked?
Recommendations... don't sweat the small stuff if you ask and you don't get anything just tell him when he goes nuts... If he didn't like you or think you were an inadequate employee he would have told you to move on.
Good luck

Is there any way that maybe you could expand your job by helping others do their job? Helping out when you see a need in someone else's job. You know, give a helping hand. Maybe you could just come out and tell your boss that you would love to help out more and could he expand your duties. If you had more to do, you would enjoy your job more. Don't do anything that will cause you to loose your job.
Good luck.

I know how it feels. I work at a fast food place, and we have four assistant managers. One of them is this older Hispanic woman who people do not like, myself included. The reason: She is mean to all the white and African-American workers, and is only easygoing with workers of her own ethnicity. She's harsh with me and one co-worker in particular for no reason. I'm sick and have been throwing up and feeling very weak all day, so, because of the vomiting, as said in our employee handbook, I called in. The woman nagged me for calling in sick and told me to come in even though I was throwing up. She didn't even care that I have a doctor appointment tomorrow afternoon to find out why I'm feeling like this. I ended up being sent home after almost three hours by one of the other managers after he overheard a customer tell me I looked terrible and I should go home. That manager and the other two are cool, and they don't treat anybody like crap.

I would ask for work every single time the boss gets up to look at you. Maybe he/she will become irritated with the constant question and leave you alone until they do have something for you to do. I tried the same thing with one of my previous employers and it did work.
