Half five is 17.30. If you have trouble remembering, it's always the smaller number plus 12, cos that's how many hours in the first half of the day. 12 +1 = 1300, 12 + 2 is 1400, etc., then just add on the minutes as usual.

"Half five" means 1/2 an hour PAST five.
Answer is 17 : 30.
I feel that : as opposed to . should be used between 17 and 30.
17:30 means 17 hours and 30 mins whereas
17.30 means 17.3 hours.

In English it is the same as 17.30 and it is more accurate to say "half past five". As gvih2g2 notes, most other languages seem to have the opposite view.
