Because we allow our egos to do the looking first. We could learn from the newly born. Are they ever repulsed by their mothers? Of course not. Newborns, until their egos begin to develop, see through the eyes of love (or spirit, or energy, or God or whatever you choose to call it). We have much to learn.

The soul is not as easy to spot. When was the last time you saw one? I'm not being facetious here.
As for physical beauty, all kinds of recent testing has shown that infants prefer prettier faces, that children do, and that adults rate people with pretty or handsome features as more intelligent and more successful, and this with knowing nothing about them.
It is thought that our genes programmed our brains to prefer beauty in a mate, because this is an indication of health and fertility. There is a growing literature on this subject (Time Magazine reported on this issue a year or two ago).

With no offense, not everyone on the planet uses that criteria with substance,,,BUT.
If you believe that perception is everything, and that Visual perception occurs first, other than to the blind, and can take place even at some distance, it's possible that our species in general is attracted to attractive initially.
Anyone of substance however often seeks more. BTW and again with no offense, "SEEING" the soul of another is truly not an instant thing. Much like the emotion defined as LOVE; to even attempt to understand and know anothers "SOUL" (which is an intangible) the process takes time.

Your question is based on a generalization that is false. Be careful with words like "always" unless you qualify them with words such as, "...always seems..." and even further qualify it with, "...always seems to me..." or other specificity.
Physical beauty is subjective (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), though there are studies which show common qualities that seem constant throughout the world.
Our eyes are usually the first of our senses to come in contact and therefore the most prominent. For example, if we were to read about people, physical beauty would not come into play.
You are judging me not on my looks but on my words.
How do you know someones soul? You must delve deeper than by any one sense alone. Therefore, human nature is based on the sensory nerves which send information to our brain for higher processing and contemplation in the mind.
It's all about which senses you are relying on for your information. Therefore, it is about the information you are sending when being observed and the information which is being paid attention to by the observer.

We're animals, we want our progeny to have every chance at success and rightly or wrongly beauty represents health and vitality to our primal conscience. It helps to ensure our survival in times of extreme predation, which is unlikely these days given our technological advancement and general repression of every other living thing on this earth. Still, a beautiful soul will shine over a beautiful face any day if given the opportunity ...

Personally, although I concede that many people do that, I will have to disagree that all of mankind looks for physical beauty, over anything else. And the reason, that is happening, is because mankind is allowing it. It's ridiculous for people to have their body cut on to make larger breasts or smaller noses, just because they have been brainwashed into thinking they are unattractive. We are all individuals. Why should we all look just alike???

This happens because of the presence of our impulsive neurons in our bodily systems. They tend to react and get attracted to the physicalness of an individual without reasons, as they are impulses. We need careful reasoning to identify the soul.

Most of us are not drawn to repulsive things (although my son can be pretty gross about that).
Before anyway can get to know who we are, they see us, smell us, hear us. All that good physical sensations.
Sometimes, the senses get in the way of knowing someone, mores the pity.
That's what is neat about the Internet. You can get to know someone without ever having any of your senses involved, other than your common sense.
My 1 1/2 cents.

I examine some holding that "objective" isn't an outstanding thanks to certain your idea. I disagree. I do imagine someone desires "objective" to be happy in existence, if purely now to not stay their existence in ineffective. it type of feels to me, that countless human beings do not comprehend what they value, if something. Or they could imagine they value something, then later stumble on it became quite something diverse. some purely value what they could take up, like you reported, or what they imagine they prefer to discover outdoors of themselves to be happy. although, the self-beautiful existence is regularly the least beautiful way of existence. i trust that's because of being reliant on different factors as well themselves to be happy. Self-expertise is valued. also, discerning your self from what you've faith your self quite to be compared to truly everyone else is valued. in case you are able to quite be self-conscious, and not in any respect in basic terms note of factors of your self you are able to relate to others, it quite is valued. yet, quite everyone must be happy. in case you do not discover happiness someplace throughout all of this, what's the point of residing? learning your self, which potential, and objective may practice to be gratifying, coming up happiness in existence.
