AI, get over it! That's not what I asked. And is it so hard to imagine what the American soldiers did when they colonized the Philippines? How many filipinos died in the Philippine-American War? Do not tell me American schools do not teach.

Wow. That's a bit of an overgeneralisation!! :)

I agree that Japan is mostly a very safe place to live, but I wouldn't say that they're 'trusting and gullible'...

Live there for a few years and you may understand things differently.

It's like saying 'why are Australians so laid back'...?

I know I'm Australian (and half Japanese) and certainly not that laid back!!

Japan has an impressive economical structure and you can find Japanese products and business almost anywhere in the world.
I'm guessing they wouldn't have been able to accomplish all that if they were gullible and trusting to every and all things.

You can't summarize a whole race with a certain characteristic based on your experience with just a hand full of people you've met.
Here's a question back at ya, maybe they WANT you to think they are gullible and trusting. Ever think of that?

That's an extremely provocative question, and there are many ways in which is can be overturned because there are many ways in which the Japanese can seem less trusting and more suspicious than Western European and American people. On the other hand, there are undeniable trends of gullability in certain contexts. Some relevant social factors may include: (i) almost total lack of satire, political satire and sarcastic humor in the mass media, (ii) strong service oriented business/interpersonal model with no apparent limit to condescending behavior and unselfconscious naivety, (iii) deep-seated social principle of maintaining harmony -so called "Wa"- so that a typical strategy for dealing with outlandish behavior, opinions etc. is feigned awe and approval rather than confrontational discourse.

The Japanese people generally are very law abiding people, and as a result, it is one of the safest countries on the earth. Doors are seldom locked, its safe to walk down a dark alley in the middle of the night, if you lose something, it probably will be turned in to the local police station, and you will get it back.

I suppose if you have such a poor moral fiber, that you could take advantage of the Japanese, but that just show you how pitiable of a human being you are.

I spent two months in Japan back in 1993. I know it's not much time but it still gave me the chance to look into some of their traces as one people. I believe that they are not so trusting and gullible. I do believe that we, westerners, just tend to think they are. The Far East peoples are filled with wisedom and millenia of experience. I think it is proper NOT to underestimate these facts. On the contrary, I consider appropiate to look at them in a more modest way, in order to learn about the many things they ALREADY know and we don't want to acknowlegde.

Most likley they are not. There are just pretending to believe the dumb things you say to be polite and not make you lose face. When you leave they probably talk about what an a ss you are for thinking they are so gullible.

They are not necessarily gullible. They may seem a lot more trusting because people in Japan think their country is very safe, they will fall asleep outside or on trains with their wallets showing from their pockets.

Japanese are polite and good. Corruption is almost nonexistant.
This may give the appearance of being gullible or trusting but not so. They're not stupid you know.

They're not. Just because a person is polite does not make them trusting or gullible.

Why are the English all short and pale? WTF? Aside from letting Godzilla in the country time after time they don't seem any more trusting or gullible than any other group of people well except the Canadians they'll believe anything.
