Red Hat Society Questions. Need advice and tips on how to start.?

I work in a retirement facility, and have been pondering the thought of starting a Red Hat Society for the residents. I am not sure how I go about starting one and what tips do you have to help me out? Do I need to register somewhere or can I just start a group independently? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!
