my son is 9 months and has been having a fever for about 13 hours now. the highest was at 4am with 103 fever rectualy. i was able to get it down to 102. he also is refusing to eat. he already is small not even on the growth chart weighing only 16.5. should i take him in, or just wait it out a bit longer to see if he can fight it on his own?

Take him today, don't wait. He may start to dehydrate and at this age it happens very quickly. Could be as simple as an ear infection, but that is right at the temperature most pediatricians would like to see them.

A fever in a child usually indicates that they have an infection somewhere's in their body. You can alternate giving both motrin and tylenol to a child with a fever. 103.0 fever is high and if it dosen't go down you need to take him to the doctor or to the er if you have too.

Infants Motrin:
Weight (lbs) Age (months) Dose (mL)

Under 6 months Ask a doctor

12-17 lbs 6 to 11 months 1.25 mL

18-23 lbs 12-23 months 1.875 mL

How much should I give my child?
As with any over-the-counter medication, always read and follow the package instructions carefully. If possible, use weight to dose; otherwise use age. To arrive at the right dose, weigh your child before giving Infants' Motrin. All dosages may be repeated every 6-8 hours, but not more than 4 times daily. A health care professional should be consulted for dosing for children under the age of 6 months.

This means a few days of poor appetite is probably adaptive. In other words, don't cajole or coerce your children into eating during fevers if they don't feel hungry; they will likely regain any lost weight quickly after the illness ends. You do, however, need to encourage fluids, because dehydration alone can drive up fever.

Hope your baby feels better soon.

A, don't be in a rush to bring the fever down. A raised temperature is the body's reaction to infection. For every degree of increased temperature, the white blood cells work about twice as well at combating infection. In case it is respiratory, you should have a cool mist humidifier, and add a pint of hydrogen peroxide to the gallon tank. Run that close to where he is,and it will greatly help to combat any respiratory infection. Do NOT try to force him to eat! Do try to get water into him. Charcoal helps by adsorbing the toxins from dead bacteria. If you mix some charcoal in water, then let it settle until the water is barely colored, and give that to him it will help. 103 degrees rectally is not dangerous, but you should not let it get much higher than that.

You need to to him to the doc ASAP! A fever is a sign of infection. If you can't get in the doc's office take him to the ER. My son had a fever and was acting fine and turned out he had pnuemonia. Don't chance it. You never know with babies.

Take him in. You must try your best to get the fever down. Bathe him in cool water. Try giving tylenol every four hours. If his fever remains that high he can start having febrile seizures.
