There are numerous different methods to use. Spray tan works but sometimes if you are fair it can look extremely fake as it doesn't always go on even and applies heavy in some areas.
Other option go to a spa and have a technician apply it, more expensive but worth it if you have a special occasion like a wedding. I find this the best way because they have the area well lit, do the exfoliation for you, apply a lotion all over and concentrate on dry areas, and a quick wipe to make sure that it doesn't come off on your clothing or go on too heavy in an area.
Cheapest option - I like Estee Lauder Go Bronze for body brand of fake tan in a bottle (I use the same on my face and I am really sensitive - waste of $$ to by just for face) to , because it has a shimmer to it. If you have a close friend that cares ask them to help you. Start by exfoliating especially the driest areas - usually around your joints (wrists, knees, elbows, ankles) then moisturize all over paying attn to areas around joints - if you don't it may look streaky here. Finally let the moisturizer set for a minute if need put more on joint areas. HAve friend Apply fake tan in a bottle in a well lit area so she/he can see the streaks before it sets. I always start at the tops of my feet and work up the legs and end at the hands. Then take a dark towel (because otherwise it will stain) and wipe off lightly in a circular fashion to avoid streaks, usually this means that if you want a darker tan that you will have to apply another time but it certainly saves you on streaks.

I've just tried the new St Tropez Everyday. Its like the Johnson's holiday skin but without some of the horrible ingredients and it washes out if you get it on fabric. As long as you follow the instructions properly its fine. I'd never used any type of tanning products and only used st tropez on my legs about a week ago so I was a clueless as you must feel. It doesn't streak if you use it correctly, you can get a weird spatula thing from boots to do your back with (if you don't have anyone to do it for you) and if you do get any of the tell-tale fake tan marks (i.e.between the fingers from not washing your hands properly, or on the wrists etc) then by exfoliating its almost gone the next day. I noticed a MASSIVE difference in my pale skin after 3 consecutive days use. I had to stop using it for a day because i was tanning so quickly.
Good luck!

Use one of the holiday skin type products over a week or so, and get some exfoliating gloves to even out any patchy bits (elbows and knees etc). This was you build up a nice even tan and you can control how dark you want it to get. Plus at this time of year you don't want to look too tanned (unless you're applying for BB)

Exfoliate your skin first especially round your knees, ankles and elbows. I put a medium blob of fake tan and medium blob of moisturiser onto my hands, rub them together then rub into desired areas paying close attention to knees etc!!
Before i used this method i kept getting streaks, not any more!!

Ditto on spray tan unless you're really fair. It's great for formals, etc. I suggest though, the night that you get it done (because you can't shower for a certain amount of time) to sleep on an air mattress (put sheets you don't care much about on) or something, because it'll come off on your bedding and you'll have to wash them the next day.

go to a beauty salon and get a spray tan, have it done a few days before you meet them so it wont be too bright, I would't recommend doing it yourself if you have not done it before trust me I have had enough disasters to know what im talking about.
make sure you shave and exfoliate the night before you go for it.
this should only cost between £10 and £25 depending where you go, well worth it.

make sure you exfoliate first, this evens out the skin tone so you are less likely to get streaking. If you are really worried about it go to a beauty therapist and get her to do it for you.
