Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I am not against helping people in need, quite the contrary. Instead this is a question about why anyone should be entitled to receive such help, not whether we should choose to provide it as a caring society. I am also not just talking about welfare and food stamps, but also health care and social security.

to those of us who paid in to the system and our dependents we invested and are recieving returns, myself am a diabled combat veteran, I recieve a VA penison for my war incurred disability, but I also volunteer at the VA, with American Indian people in our AIM food bank, I visit inmates as a spiritual volunteer, so even though my ancient boday and scars prevent me from a 40 hr work week, I think I paid the price, I also still pay taxes and try to give back.

The founders of the USA wanted to create a country where people could be entrepreneurs. Well, Entrepreneurs take risks (which we, as Americans find admirable) and sometimes, actually often times, those risks turn out to be a failure. The Government provides a safety net for these people, because without it, people would be less inclined to take risks. Of course that's just one perspective.

As for health care, many people REFUSE to leave a job that they hate simply because of the Health Care Benefits that they receive through the employers. Being stuck in an uninetersting job is bad for the employer, and the employee. So, maybe if the burden of Health Care was lifted off of the employers, people would have the freedom to pursue their professional interests, and employers could have the freedom of hiring employees without having the costs of health care.

Wow, that's actually kind of hard to answer. Personally, I belive that the "requirements" necessary to receive welfare, food stamps and health care are skewed and easily manipulated. I've known people who live off the government and end up doing better off than my family does. It doesn't seem to be about helping the ones that work hard and could truly use temporary assistance anymore. My husband and I tried to get assistance after the birth of our first child when we really could have used a hand up and were pretty much told by our case worker that our flaws were: we were married.....we had our son after we got married....and we were both working. WTF kind of logic is that?!?!?! Needless to say, we were told that we made "too much money" to recieve any assistance (We were both making minimun wage.) As for Social Security, as long as it is taken out of my paycheck, I belive that I am entitled to it when I reach the necessary age/requirements to use it.

People like Timothy make me sick. Obviously the founding fathers did not intend to create a welfare state. If they wanted that, they would have created entitlement programs in their time, they didn't. We didn't get evil socialist programs until FDR. If the founding fathers wanted a welfare state, how do you explain the absence of social programs for nearly 150 years? Think about what your saying before you go quoting the Constitution.

Nobody is entitled to financial assistance. All social programs are inefficient and immoral. There is no justification for stealing from one citizen to give to another. Should we help our fellow man? Obviously, yes we should. Should the government force us to do it under threat of incarceration (the penalty for not paying taxes)? Hell No!

The WHOLE point of the Constitution and Bill of Rights is to protect us FROM government. The founding fathers wanted the government to have no part in our every day lives. They believed in freedom. Social programs are slavery, not freedom. If you support them, you support slavery.

The powers of the federal government are limited and explicitly enumerated in the articles of the Constitution. Running social programs is NOT one of them. If idiots like Timothy would read past the first paragraph they would know that.

The government needs to stop paying these bums that wont work. Unless you are disabled ( with a real medical problem that prevents you from working) or the senior citizen. These people are on very low fixed incomes. 250-700 a month some even lower !!! But the government doesnt help them, or gives them VERY VERY Little.

But they will give a mom that wont work with 4 kids About 800 in food stamps. Give her 2000-6000 a year in child tax credit in a tax return........... full medical..........and sometimes cash. And this woman wont work but continues having babies. ( most have a man living with them that they dont turn in because hes working........... And one woman i know gets 1500 a month in child support PLUS full medical and 800 in food stamps and her husband they she is supposed to be " seperated from" makes over 1000 a month........... All this fraud and no working is why everyone is mad. And she gets free rent and utilitity assistance......... Stop helpping them , and help the seniors......

I get so mad when i go shopping. I look for sales, I buy healthy foods, and i pay for my food. But I always get behind someone in line using food stamps......... their kids are dirty looking but they are dressed to the tee.

They have mostly soda, pre- made stuff and junk food............. doesnt even have the sense to buy healthy food. If during the time limit they get food assistance, food should be bought for them........ not trust them to make good healthy choices...............

Edit: This is to Paul.............. Paul VA benifits are NOT WELFARE BENIFITS !!!!!!!!!! God Bless YOU ! You earned it, and I for one would not mind caring for you and your fellow vet's needs.

because sometimes Americans are in need. there should be more reforms,to deal with fraud, but we have one of the best systems.

"This country will not be a permanently good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a reasonably good place for all of us to live in."

"There is not a man of us who does not at times need a helping hand to be stretched out to him, and then shame upon him who will not stretch out the helping hand to his brother."

edit. a bigger concern about welfare should be the welfare we provide to other countries, especially those that claim they are independent and prosperous

I don't believe there is anything, constitutionally, that endorses giveaway programs.I have no problem helping people in need but I despise the govt. taking 50% of my tax money and giving it away,to any welfare type program. As far as people feeling they have a right to financial assistance, they have NO RIGHTS. It's a learned "reaction"that has been promoted by the liberals in this country.

because our constitution begins with these words:

"We (a collective term) the people in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic traquility, provide for the common defense (here it comes) PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE and secure the blessing of liberty ..."
