it would be helpful to know which meds she was put on and for how long she has been taking them.
antibiotics can take up to 48 hours to start working and depending on how severe the infection is-it could be days before she starts to feel better.
i say give the meds a chance to do their job. if after 2-3 days she's not starting to feel better-have her schedule a followup appointment. sometimes, the antibiotic has to be switched b/c the body is resistant to it or it's not the right medication for that specific strain of infection.
she can gargle with salt water (2tsp of salt to 8oz of water), use choloraseptic spray, or suck on cough drops/ice/candy to ease the sore throat.
use a warm mist humidifier in her room at nite while she sleeps. this will help keep the air moist and help soothe the sore throat
take ibuprofen (if not allergic) 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours to help with the pain.

It usually takes a week to reduce the infection. The pain she is in means that she let the infection grow to much before she went to the doctor. The best thing is for her to stay out of the cold whether and if she swims she should take a break for at least a month these thing will aggravate it further. When she go to bed it best if she wear a turtleneck sweater or something around her neck the will not choke her and drink hot liquid with honey and lemon or lime.

I know you want to help your mother but you have to realize some important issues. Those symptoms can lead to ANY medical problem. Many symptoms can partake with many types of diseases and disorders. Since the doctor has already seen your mother, he should know what is causing her problem. Therefore, having a bunch of strangers in a forum guessing what it is will not help and can only make matters worse since some may guess a life threatening illness while others may guess a minor infection, which will only provide undue stress and confusion for you.
If the meds don't appear to be working, tell her doctor. He can try another method. I also suggest you speak with the doctor for "detailed" information about the illness and the time involved for treatment. A caring doctor will be happy to inform you.
Good luck

She needs to either go back to that dr and tell him the meds aren't working. Or if the dr isn't open minded she needs to see a new dr.
Some of these dr's can be very stubborn.
But for the pain she can try chloreseptic, that will numb the throat. She can boost her immune system with golden seal and echnicea (sic) and vitamin c. Drink lots of water.

I can't believe that I forget the salt water. Another think is this stuff called alcamol, it's found behind the pharmacists counter. Choose one, salt water or alcamol, only though. I think it's called alcamol. The pharmacist will know what I mean. I used to gargle it when I was younger and did a lot of musicals and performances.

Sorry your mom is sick. Don't know what it could be, but when I have a sore throat, I like herbal mint tea with honey. The mint and honey sooth a sore throat. Remember also that if she is taking anti-biotics, they will take a few days to work. When my sinuses are blocked, I find when I sit upright, I can breath better. Get her to sit upright, but bring her alot of pillows so that she can still be comfortable. Hope she feels better soon.

yr mum needs to go back to the dr as he may want to place her on different meds. i know this sounds aweful, but to gargle salty water is very effective way to combat a sore throat. i was asked to do this by an old indian dr, and was amazed by the instant result. a level teaspoom in a cup of water is all you need, ask yr mother to do this every 4 hrs. as far as her infection she will need to maintain taking antibiotics, as this is the only thing that will cure the infection, good luck and let me know how yr mother goes...good luck!
