All long run and hard working persons will understand Gandhi. Gandhiji became successful because first Englishmen had law system and second he involved common men and women and taught basics to be economically independent by by teaching nation how to make bread (namak), clothes (Charkha) and House. He worked hard to remove mental differences in people of India includes caste, race, religion etc. He taught Indians travelling in third class compartments starting his day at 4 am to be independent of English industrial economy and live with own hard work. Gandhiji's contribution is nation building. Above all, the major turning point was the second world war due to which British human resources got involved in saving Britain when Germans attacked south Britain. British promised to free India if Indian soldiers will fight with Japanese armies in British command. Netaji fought with Japanese who also got defeated by America (nuclear bombs). Gandhiji's contribution is nation building, Netaji contribution is short term and small scale. You decide.

Gandhiji and Netaji Both were great leaders and fredom fighters. but they had different vision of the ways to achieve freedom. It would be unfare to compare their contribution to nations freedom.

However since gandhiji's approach was totally innovative and involved more common men and general public, he was more popular and successful. Further more Netaji died at an early age while Gandhiji lived to see free India, his memories are many and fresher.
