They are NOT legal in the US to have as pets. The only way is to become a liscenced wildlife rehabilitator. You would have to get a liscence through the DNR.

Darn shame I tell ya. Made illegal so all wealthy dipshits in USA could hunt them. They still do in Fairfax VA, etc. wealthy places.
No they don't sell one. Many animal care givers nurse them to health but then then are forced by laws to return them to the wild.
You would have to talk with the department of wildlife & take a test to become a licensed wild animal care giver rehabilitator.
Some parts of the country there may be Fennec owners but if you mean RED as in "Vulpes-Vulpes" species then no that's not legal yet. And for a money oriented modern hunting industry.
other: Many dog species in scientific study/DNA research were found to have evolved from the fox & not the wolf. In captivity a fox shifts colors more than a wolf & features over a quicker amount of time.
Best of luck.

I have never heard of anyone owning a red fox however if you are intrested in foxes and are looking for one as a "pet" you must remember that they are"wild" animals. You must first learn everything you can about their behavior in the wild and in captivity..ask all the questions you can. you also need to check with your state laws regarding exotics as pets, your county, and your city. here is a great link that i found to help you with laws http://www.thefcf.com/legal the only foxes I have found to for sell as "pets" are the fennec fox and their price ranges from $800 - $1500 sometimes higher if you buy from a reputable breeder.

I would highly suggest you do your research!! The best place to start is with a wildlife rescue specialist.
Wild animals do not make great pets. I would highly suggest you contact a local rescue and ask them your questions. There are wildlife rescues all across the country. I don't know where you are located, but try: http://www.mypetnanny.info/pd/index.htm and see if you can find a wildlife rescue in your area.
There is a lot to know when you are dealing with exotic pets. Nature needs to be respected!!
I hope you find the information helpful.

Hi there...owning any exotics "IF" they are legal, which red foxes are not will require a USDA/APHIS permit. You will need to contact your state wildlife agency for state requirements. Also check your county government for information on licensing and zoning. And if you are within city limits, you may need city agency licensing also. On a federal level you will need a U.S.D.A. license issued through APHIS (Animal and Plant Heath Inspection Service). They will have an inspector come out and see your enclosure prior to approval. Through them you will need to keep records of diet, vet care, and have annual inspections (also subject to "drop" inspections throughout the year) prior to renewal. They also require that your vet make at least biannual visits. The other regulating agency is U.S.D.I. (U.S. Dept. of Interior). They require licensing on endangered species only.

It is not legal in the U.S. to keep any wild animal without a license to keep them. Most times they are given to wildlife rehabilitators and not just someone who thinks they need a wild animal as a pet. That would be cruel. It is also selfish. They belong inthe wild not your home. You should call the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and tell them you want one.

maybe check with your state and see if you need any permits for one as it's a wild animal. it won't be very cuddley and is likely to get more wild as it matures, so a good secure enclosure for it is essential. i don't think they'd make that good a "pet" as a dog would. they would never be completely tame, it's not like you could take it out for walks!
it would really need a large outdoor enclosure for it to thrive. and it's likely to bite. it wouldn't be sleeping at the end of your bed every night.
they're best left in the wild.
