The queen goes on the square of the colour she is - so the king goes on the square of the opposite colour.
You should also set up the board so that the rook on your RIGHT is on a WHITE square.

The King always go on "e" if the board has letters on the side. If not, the King always go on the fifth square from left to right or fourth from right to left. IMPORTANT: on the right hand side of each player there must be a white square at the corner or the board is set up wrong. As for the king, I am talking about the first row, called a rank in chess.

set up chess board with a white square at bottom right side (both players). White king starts on black square fourth from bottom right inclusive. Black king starts on white square fourth from bottom left inclusive. NB the kings are on the same file as each other at game commence.

The queen starts on the same colour square as the queen itself (eg White Queen starts on white square and Black Queen starts on black square) the king always starts beside the queen

I never listen to what people say about chess, poker, or sports abilities. They simply lie too much, wanting to show off. The really good ones are usually quiet about what they truly know. I get them out in the public spectacle and find out if they are a slug or not. The best chess players don't talk tournaments but titles instead (Master, for instance).

Just remember the phrase "Queen to color"....so whatever color you are playing, the Queen will always be on that color square (white or black)....then the King will fit in nicely next to her, once you set up your Rooks, Knights & Bishops

Next to the queen and the queen is always on her own color. So if you have black and red or black and white squares the black queen is on the black square and the king next to her.
