i have a 40 hunter. I was walking along and saw a 41 shadow priest horde. ( im alliance). i attacked him but right then he put on some damage absorbing bubble, and then he used some super damage attacks that killed me easilly with out losing life!!! so i made a shadow priest in horde and talked to the guy and he told me how good they are and all the stuff about them. I was soo happy with it until........ i hear from people that in raids / instances especially end game, if im shadow spec ill still be expected to just heal. Shadow priests are like masters at pvp so are good on 1 target at a time. Will i really have to just heal? if ya then i dont know if i should make him... thanks for reading this!

it depends on what you want to do with the character end-game. if you are in a strict raiding guild yes, you are probably expected to heal, and they may even ask you to respec holy or discipline. if you want to do lots of pvp - go melt faces and enjoy it!

in general - people see priest, they see/expect healing - unfortunately that comes with the class. when you do try getting instance runs (5-10 mans) going, try and make sure you're in a group with either a holy priest, resto druid or a pally that is specced for healing (i forget the talent trees pallys use), that way healing is already covered and you're free to melt away (just be sure to use vampiric embrace and help out with healing the group that way).

that said though, with the burning crusade out now and the change in instance sizes, there have been some shakeups in what is expected from raid class makeup. there may be need for shadow priests as damage dealers, i don't know.

i raided onyxia and molten core long ago with raids that had holy priests and one shadow priest. the shadow priest, with vampiric embrace and doing damage, actually stayed up on the heal charts and kept us alive.

don't let what people say sway what you want to do... play the game to enjoy it.

The good news is, you can try out both and see which you like best. All it takes is a little bit of Gold. I strongly recommend going Shadow or Disc for leveling. You will have a lot more survivability, and be able to kill things much faster. Also, with Spirit Tap maxed out (and imp. wand) you will have very little downtime. At higher levels you will probably need to spec Holy at -some- point, unless you are part of a guild that recognizes how incredible shadow priests are for utility in dungeons and raids. Now, I know it's unpopular to say, but there is a lot of pressure to spec as a healer if you can heal, mostly because you'll be getting a lot of tells asking you to heal an instance. Sometimes, it may also feel like you can't complete your objectives (quests) because everyone and their brother rolled a damage class, and you may have a hard time getting into groups. However, a smart group will love you, and bring you along as a mana battery, and as a person who will help bring on the pain. The downside of course, is that you can't go into a dungeon or raid if you don't have enough healers to begin with. So, you may consider speccing holy for a while at 70 to get yourself Keyed for Karazhan, run some Heroic dungeons, or help out your guild as they are getting a raid on farm, then re-spec shadow so that you can have a little fun. :)

I have a shadow spec priest (and a hunter, druid, rogue, warrior, mage)

4 level 48's and 2 level 64's

The shadow priest can melt faces faster than any other class!

And is (like a druid) a great back-up healer! With vampiric embrace you actually heal your team as you deal damage. To position yourself for this role, you'll want healing threat reduction, improved vampiric embrace, and reduced shadow spell threat in your talent tree.

Thusly equiped, you are a great support to a holy spec'd priest (main healer). You heal while you deal, and when needed, you can be a backup healer (after you turn off shadow form).

Of course this requires a guild that has some creativity

Yes, you're still expected to heal. If you do so much DPS that you can take down a mail-wearing character no problem, then you're going to pull WAY too much aggro on elite monsters than the group wants you to. Since you'd be in shadow form, you wouldn't be able to heal yourself, so the other healer would have to take time to heal you instead of focusing on the main tank or DPSers (if you're fighting more than one mob).

Just say "LFG: ZF. 40 Priest" or something when you get up to that level, and heal. Yes, you're healing spells won't be that great, but they'll do. As a priest, you don't need a holy spec. to heal greatly. You just need to be out of shadowform to heal decently.

So yes, you're still expected to heal, even though shadowform can do a ton of DMG.
Just a side note to the first replier: Feral Spec sucks for DPS. Learn to play your class and heal. Stop crying about it.

*Note: "tony c" doesn't even have the game. Seriously, don't listen to him. I'm a 62 warlock on the Deathwing server..he probably doesn't even know what a warlock is.

Shadow priests aren't expected to heal... they're not specialized in it. Holy priests are expected to heal. Some people just don't know. I have a druid and they expect me to be a main healer when I'm feral spec!!! My brother has a shadow priest and he loves it. I have a pally, hunter, warrior, rogue, and druid (all horde). Good luck with your new char.

That's what priests do in instances and raids....heal.

Yes, you will be made to heal, more than likely at high levels they will also ask you to respec your character to holy/disc.

UNLESS you choose to join a PvP guild. They usually don't do many raids and basically nothing but BGs and world PvP.

You don't have to do crap. I love and hate my priest. He is last to loot, first to die, and usually some nub head will blame the priest for dying or if the party wipes.

With that in mind, I have a lvl 60, and a lvl 50 priest. At first, I loved to play my rogue, cause I could pwn everything. Now at lvl 58 with rogue, I'm finding my priest's are tougher. I mean, for one on one, even two on one, they just simply outlast the enemy.
