I have a squier telecaster with a black glossy finish, I want to put strips of tape on it and spray paint it white so I get the van halen effect but I do not want to strip the guitar. will the white paint take hold without any previous stripping? can I laquer over everything if the white paint does stick?

I would tape it off how you want it and then sand the bare surfaces. The paint will hold better if it is applied to a rough surface.... If you paint over the smooth surface it will chip away very easily. When it has dried then you can laquer up...I don't think it would be a problem... I do, however, suggest that you use spray paint and spray laquer and do not brush it on.
