Its very cold during the cold weather here in the uk, and i hear its getting worse, electricity its costing us a fortune every week when we have very little to spend, we are using candles just now but still very cold, i would use a gas heater canister sort of thing but not alous gas in our flats any ideas???

Propane? Natural Gas? Coal? Wood? Oil? Kerosene? Corn Pellets?

How about a fireplace? Maybe if you don't already have one you can get one installed. But if you do decide this make sure you tell them to get a natural wood burner kind because nowadays they have like "fake logs" that turn on by the flick of a light-switch.

i have a wood burning stove that has kept my heating bill VERY low exept when the EPA declares a no-burn night then i use the naural gas furnace. there are also oil heaters that burn used automobile oil available here in the US
