American here from NYC.

Just recently upon visits to the UK, learned about 'chavs". Cracked me up, b/c we have our versions of that here too...
Anyway, just curious-

do you realize you're one if you *are* one & is the word offensive to you?

Interesting replies.

So it's working class kids. Ok, well in that regard, our version (not hillbillies, btw), tend to come from both "blue collar" families &/or higher income fams'. If they're the kind I'm thinking of in terms of clothing, (a lot like Ali G), we see that on both ends of the income spectrum here. Thing is, the vast majority are only doing it because it's more a fashion statement than anything else. ie: "wannabee" thugs. In reality, few would actually last a NY minute in a rough neighborhood...

Btw, true hillbillies/trailor trash by our definition, tend to be VERY insular & isolated people. many have never left their towns/villages & many have never once met or socialized with anyone outside of their ethnic/racial backgrounds.

not a chav mate but i can explain a little about them:

1) they wouldn't be on here as they'd need a computer. if they had one they'd sell it for some new alloys for their escort.

2) to be offended by being called a chav depends upon the chav. some would do a stupid laugh and say something along the line of 'ha ha, yea but i ay bovered you c***...ere pass me your rizla geez.' others would bottle you.

3)they all without fail, even the girls wear lynx africa, an english deodorant. dont know why this is important but it always make me laugh.

(by the way, if by your versions you mean 'hillbillies' then your bang on, only instead of playing the ukulele and b*mming you, they play drum and base from kenwood stereo's and mug you.)

only joking they're not a bad bunch, usually just younger lads whith caps and their first cars. think we've all been a bit guilty of it.

hope this helps.

Real Chav's know there are Chav and take it as a statement of fact with out insult. Then there's the Ned Chav's which is something quite different. They are wanna be Chav's but don't know cashmere socks are the finest things to adorn your feet!

I've heard they wear cunning desguises and hooded clothing to conseal their identity.

I think its become a global term for what you guys may call trailor trash. And i think most people judge not on the clothing but "ow dey speak ya get me init doh bruff"

Noooo, a chav never admits he's a chav. If I called someone a chav then he'd probably knife me. It's an insult - they'd find it offensive.

it's just the 'in the know' word for modern working class kids.
