I was one of those for awhile. The most common name for that position is analytical chemist.

As far as job description… There is a wide variety. Some jobs are crushingly mechanical, sequentially performing the same 10 tasks over and over, day after day.

Other jobs are completely unstructured. In those jobs it is not uncommon to have a guy, wearing a HAZMAT suit and respirator, walk into your lab carrying a Gatorade bottle with some brownish paste inside it. The summery of his request being, “test it for everything – including moon dust”. Which, of course with the good training and education, you are prepared to perform.

Most of the time it bounces between those two extremes. Overall it is a fun gig.
