Because the song says so.
It is a rather simple deduction. The one you love the most is intimately, emotionally attached to you and therefore values your actions. Those you love less or do not love at all have no emotional ties and consequently cannot be hurt as much.
Makes sense, doesn't it?

I don't think people that we love want to hurt us it just happens because we do love them. The only people that can hurt us are the ones we love we have no emotions invested in strangers so they have no effect on us. In romantic love some are selfish and are not concerned with the other persons feelings. In that case the one that gets hurt is not responsible and the one doing the hurting at some point will realize what they have done and have to carry a big ache in their heart. You can let go of hurt eventually but guilt will stay with you forever.

Sometimes you do things that maybe wouldnt hurt someone so much if they didnt love you. But once you love someone you are opening yourself up to the possibility of being hurt. There is so much more at stake. When two people really love each other, there is just so many emotions between them that when things get heated it is more intense that it would ever be with anybody else.

I don't like to think this way but I think it is because the person they are hurting really doesn't mean anything to them. I also think it is like "hurt someone before you are hurt".

What hurts the most is when you have already told someone what will hurt you and they do it anyway.
