It's very expensive. And can be a bit smelly. But it is of course better than no central heating at all!

The biggest drawback of oil central heating is that you have to buy the oil by the tank full and pay for it in advance. There is no pay as you use it month by month as there is with gas. The boiler can be more noisy than a gas boiler because it has an extra pump to atomise the fuel. Otherwise as far as controls etc it works exactly the same as gas.

I differ from the first answer. I don't find it that expensive. It costs us about £600 year for a large detached 4 bed/4 badth/ 4 reception stone house out in the wilds....i think gas would be dearer.
Also, you don't have to wait for the oil man to arrive. Just phone up, they turn up soemtime that week, if you are not in they leave a recipt with a metered reading on it for you - you send them a cheque.
Some of the larger firms do offer a monthly debit scheme to spread the costs.
+ prices change faster than gas, you get the price drops quicker as they price it week by week. Also, you can fill up when its cheap if you plan properly ( summer ).
+ No standing charge
+ Freedom from British Gas ( thats got to be worth a few quid )
+ you feel connnected to the area as the oil man is like a postman - he knows everthing and everyone and I enjoy our cup of tea whne he turns up.
cons
- you have to remember to top up
- you have to have a tank somewhere

1) easy and clean to use
2) easy to control individual room temperature if thermostatic valves are fitted
3) you can join an oil buying group to reduce costs
4) we pay about £700 per year to heat a 3bed semi (including water)
5)keep the system serviced and maintained thoroughly.
6) use fernox or similar corrosion inhibitor.

i have found that getting parts for an oil fired boiler not only more difficult but also take longer to get, and the burners need more maintenance, fuel wise they are cheaper, just keep an eye on your tank. order well in advance, regularly have the system cleaned and run it even on the days you think you dont need it for ten minutes just to keep it clear or sediment.

Growing up, a lot of people in the country had this where I was at, and it was very expensive to have the tank filled. If you find it to be too expensive, is there a possibility to upgrade to a different system?
