I have Sky Wireless Broadband on my PC and use a Netgear Wireless Adapter. No problem.

I've just bought an Advent laptop and I'm using the built in wireless modem but couldn't get it to connect to Sky, it just kept saying 'aquiring IP address' then 'low or no connectivity'

I phoned Sky but was cut off twice but before I was, one lady was talking about disabling my security which I did.

I have since managed to get a connection but with my security disabled, my question is, how do I get both connection and security?

This has nothing to do with SKY.

Its your internet Netgear Router configuration you have to make to let it work.

By your question i understood you have disabled SSID Broad Caste.

You havent mentioed any where if you have enabled DHCP in your wireless router or not.

If not assign an IP address 192.168.1.5 to the laptop.

They try to connect it using the xp network conenction wizard using the SSID of the netgear writer which you have hidden.

If this doesnt solve you issue please get back to me.

I've had similar problems with a different broadband connection and hardware. The issues have usually been caused by the software provided by the hardware manufacturer.

Windows XP has built in tools to manage wireless connections.

Try removing the drivers etc and then just using the windows tools to set up the connection. There are tools/tutorials on Microsoft's site for this.

It might be worth trying it with just the Laptop firewall disabled. I have had to do this on occasions when connecting wireless hot spots throughout the world.

The modem router should have its own firewall and therefore your security is not being compromised because you will still have the anti-virus active on the laptop
