Have recently bought a laptop (loaded with Vista) which is to be used to produce audio recordings but my existing hardware (external usb audio pre amp) does not have Vista drivers available,

My answer would be to scrub Vista and install XP ... I read that Vista cannot be uninstalled but if I reformat the hard drive and start from scratch then, in my mind, this should work.

Can anyone tell me if I'm making sense with this and what problems I'm going to come up against?

Thanks
Sue :o)

Well finally an operating system that lasted short than windows mellenium!

Seriously not a techie but problems I've had is partitions in the hard drive keeping stuff like that going wehn I reformated (ahem) years ago. I would probably get the guys I bought the machine from to do it rather then forking out an additional tag for XP.
or contact the software guys for your audio bits for an update.

Next time, Im buying a mac.

In theory it makes sensee but I have seen warnings all over the web that advise against downgrading Vista. For HP computers (for example) they have updated the bios and software to only work with Windows Vista. So it is possible that if you downgrade to XP while that one audio software might work, nothing else software or hardware wise on your computer will work. it is a huge risk, if I were you I would consider looking at other audio software(s) or contacting the company that made yours and seeing if there is a temporary fix. Would hate for you to end up with an unuseable PC.

Yeah you can format your drive.

as long as you have an xp disc handy with the activation hack you can wipe the drive and use whatever you like.

one exception to this i've seen is on certain branded laptops (primarily toshiba) there can be a lock in the bios which prevents you from installing ANY operating system. essentially, you're left with only using the system recovery disc. In that case, you need to get a hold of a bios update which removes the restriction. I've only seen it rarely and usually a good scream at customer service will get your bios flash in quick order.

wut ur saying should work normally
or if u re install XP the way it is on another part of the hard drive (C: and D:) u can have on one PC both XP and Vista, and the system will ask u which one u wanna use when u boot it
Thats wut i m doing, and its working perfectly with me
