I am against them. I work with a rescue, and 99% of breeders are not what people term "responsible", and pet stores are only utilized by the ignorant who want an animal and fast.
If we eliminated BOTH of those factors, we wouldn't be euthanizing so many animals.

Its a hard one to generalize on because there are good and bad.
A responsible animal breeder has merit because they are looking to ensure that breed standards are being maintained and do so on the careful selection of parents when considering a litter. They should also be highly aware of the nutritional requirements of the mother to be and of the same for the litter when it is born.
In other words a breeder should,by definition be more knowledgeable and if that knowledge is put into practice then they should be in a position to offer the public a well bred and healthy offspring.
Pet shops are a different matter. They are the middle man. Here I would say it is more a question of what type of animal you are considering.I have no problem seeing hamsters or goldfish on offer but despise seeing a litter of puppies for sale baking in the sun through an unventilated shop window.I also consider pet shop owners in general less concerned as to the homes such animals are going to.Many reputable breeders on the other hand do make some effort to ensure that the animal is going to a suitable owner and environment before parting with it.
But sadly there are still all too many exeptions

there should be a law that all animal a breeders and shops should be inspected on a regular basse's and if they don't follow the rules they loose there licence immidiately and the right to start up a new business under a new name and if cruelty is in question anyone that is found guilty of negleck or cruelty gets a find a big one and even prison time and these people would not have the right to own an animal ever again since they would be to irresponsable and that would be for life as you can see i really don't like people that are cruel to animals i wish they would change the law here in canada to make it more stricked and especialy here in quebec canada the laws do nothing almost to protect animals we need help and soon lorie

I'm for breeders and pet shops but only if they house their stock in decent size cages or places that they can exercise in and treat them with respect and care. Also the animals need a break or holiday from breeding, training and events sometimes to let them relax and recover. Animals need to be kept in open and clean areas for their happiness and health.
I've been in a pet shop that had birds crammed into cages with only a perch right up the top so all the birds had to duck the roof of the cage. It had dead fish in the tanks with the live ones, some even looked like they'd been there for days. It also had kittens running around the dirty shop floor. The worst thing I saw in that shop was a poor Rainbow Lorikeet. He was a medium bird in a cage suitable only for a small bird, he had to duck his head from the roof of the cage and he was pucking out his feathers from being so unhappy. I nearly bought him so I could free him! That shop should be closed and the owners fined thousands of dollars.

I dont really care as long as the animals are well and truly looked after and found a suitable home. I think that is the most important thing. You could pay a lot of money for a pup of a professional breeder and it could still have been ill treated!! x

against. It is a cruel job. You don't know what the pets have gone through when you buy them. I once bought a dog from the pet store and they neglected to tell me it had flees and cancer. They said it was 5ish but it was really 15.

I am for them because if it wasn't for them everybody will be buying pets in Mexico and bringing over sick, tortured animals to United States setting off a disease outbreak.
have you seen the documentaries on how bad animals are treated by illegal breeders. They make psychos look like reasonable persons.

if there is a good reason why i should be 'against', then i'm 'for'.
breeding animals is o.k. if done by the correct people and pet stores are the only way to give these beloved animals new homes but if it is done illeagally then hell to those people.

If They are hurting the animals and such I would probibly not like them. Pounds and stuff like that really I don't like. But most of the time i think i do like them really unless they are obusing or hurting the animals.
