At the moment I have an Epson C46 which has seen better days.
What I am now looking for is a printer that will do Colour Photo`s
Black Print together with a Flat Bed Scanner. Also one where the
cartridges do not cost a fortune. Everywhere I go the sales man seems to have one that they have been told to promote. So all answers would be appreciated.

why don't you visit the amazon digital cam store : http://astore.amazon.com/digitalcam-20
there is a section for printers, hundreds of them, along with specifications , prices,reviews....etc they have every brand name you can remember so they won't promote ant particular brand, you have the full range and the decision is yours. myself I like Hp

For the cost of running I would recommend a canon or another epson printer.

They will provide you with the highest quality photos. You can always expect to pay $60 - $100 for a set of cartridge so volume is important. Lexmark and HP have high cost low volume cartridges.
One the side of the box there will be a listing as to what cartridges the printer takes. Jot that down, price them out and see how much ink you are actually getting for your money.

The consumables are going to be what is going to cost the most money it is very important to price them out. If the cartridge does not list the volume on the box then avoid buying a printer that requires them.

I have had HP, Epson, Dell, Apple, Lexmark and Canon printers. I currently believe that Canon is the way to go. Their multi-function machines make awsome color photos, nice copies and can be used to fax and scan. The very best part is the small print cartridges that only cost about $12 each. The last a decent amount of time and you don't have to buy a new cartridge every time your Cyan gets low....you just buy a Cyan cartridge.

I've used a lot of different printers and recently started using a Canon which I LOVE.

Do *notnotnotnot* get a printer from Dell. They're relabelled printers from other manufacturers with a chip added that will reject all but (expensive) Dell cartridges. I also had to junk a Dell when a customer switched to Mac and the Dell refused to work with the Mac, even tho I had the original drivers (the printer was a relabelled Lexmark).

I would say dont go for an All-In One, its an 'all your eggs in one basket approach' If say the printer packs up, you lose your scanner as well. my Epson (320photo) carts are forty pence...yep, cartfull of ink = 40 pence. My approach to a printer, first i searched for 'Continuous Ink Supply System' (it has bottles of ink at the side of the printer which feed the cartridges )
So, now you have created a list of printers which can use this method. Take your pick, get the CISS, start saving.
Take a look here, this is the setup I have
