just downloaded flashget and bitdownload cannot seem to get either to work what am i doing wrong

remove it and reinstall
and restrart your computer

To download with flashget, right click on the download link for the file that you want to download, and click download with flashget.
Or, copy the link by right clicking on the download link and add it to flashget. Then press download.
You can also use download accelerator which is one of the most used download managers. You can get it from: http://www.speedbit.com/
For torrents, use bitcomet which is a small and good application.
Go to http://bitcomet.com and download the last stable version. Whne you run a torrent file, leave it on for some time as the first time a torrent is being downloaded it takes time for connection.
If both applications are not openiing at all then you have a faulty installation. Uninstall them and reinstall again.
