To function at your best, you need to get the amount of sleep that is optimal for you, probably 8-10 hours like everyone else.

To find out for yourself how much sleep you need:

1) Set aside one week of vacation from school, work, etc. It usually takes a week to work.

2) Get mild aerobic exercise in the sun every day so your sleep isn't affected in a negative way.

3) Make sure that you have at least 10 hours of quiet time with no interruptions in the house at night.

4) Go to bed at the same time every night with NO alarm set, stay in bed for at least 8 hours, but get up when you wake up naturally (after the 8 hours is up).

By the end of the week, you will probably be waking up at the same time every morning, and you will know how many hours of sleep your body needs every night. The human body does not function right when it is forced to stay up at night. That includes the sleep function, so this won't work if you try sleeping during the day and staying up all hours at night.

I think it was Ben Franklin who said that every hour of sleep before midnight is equal to two after—works for me!

If you do stay up too late at night or don't get enough sleep for any reason, try catnapping after study the next day, or while you are working on a problem. Memory storage and problem solving seem to work better than if you don't nap, though not as good as getting a good night's sleep in the first place.

Will the practice of limiting your sleep help you in your studies?

Have you tested this theory yet?

Habitual sleep deprivation may ensure a successful genius, but it could alternatively produce a burned out genius.

Should a genius get four hours sleep or nine hours sleep?

Choose what seems best for your body or do the experiment.

I suggest that if you can sleep 7 hours and wake refreshed each day - then your brain will more readily absorb and retain the material that you plan to master.

If you sleep only 4 hours daily and become deprived of sleep, your brain may not readily absorb what is read - producing some memory loss toward the end of a day of studies - preventing mastery of the subject. Of course you could re-read the lessons.

Advanced, ambitious, creative, CURIOUS, devoted, disciplined, genius, hard working, healthy, imaginative, intelligent, invested, MOTIVATED, practiced, REWARDED, self-controlled, STUDIED, tempered, TESTED, unwavering or unwary?

Spend some time researching sleep and you will find that HGH only gets produced during REM sleep which usually takes a good 8 - 10 hours of sleep. HGH counters the effects of Cortisol which degrades the body and mind.
I suggest you get your rest at night because sunlight is vital to your health.
Take a siesta during the mid day to keep you fresh- no more than 20 minutes.
Drink plenty of water and get regular exercise, too.
A healthy mind requires a healthy body. They are one and the same. This does not mean you have to have a perfectly functioning body, look at Stephen Hawking. Just that it must be healthy to maximize and take full advantage of it's potential.
Regular massage will help reduce the effects of stress and make you more alert.
Don't try to "multi-task" leave that to your computer. Human brains can only pay attention to one thing at a time. You must pay attention.*
Above all remember that moderation is the key, even with moderation!

After reading Einsteins idiotic theories on light being constant I wouldnt follow his footsteps. For someone to come up with something so completely brainless, he had to have some sort of mental disorder, and perhaps a lack of sleep was one of them.

You will actually die from a lack of sleep quicker than you will die from lack of food.
