Race was the major reason. Singapore has a majority of Chinese people. Malaysia at that time wanted to establish what the US would called 'Affirmative Action' for the Malays or the Bumiputra while Singapore wanted to limit the special treatment given to the Malays.

When election came about, because the huge Chinese population in Malaysia, the then PAP of Singapore were able to generate a lot of support & at one point would have won a majority of the seats in Parliment.

The Malays would never accept a government filled with Chinese whom the Malays considered immigrants & who they resent due to the wealth & religious differences.

Civil war would have erupted. As such because of the differences between the political parties, Singapore was granted independence which at that time, everyone thought Singapore would buckle within a few years.

In truth civil war did erupt in the next few years when several prominent Malay politicians lost in the general election but incited racial issues for their lost of power.

the conspiracy theory my ex-classmates and I came up with was that Lee Kwan Yew had great foresight and the only reason for the merger and thus the split was that he wanted Singapore to get independence from the British.

the main reason was political - Malaysia was very biased towards the majority race (read the bumiputra policy) while Singapore was all for equality. plus Singapore's politicians were apparently a threat to the Malaysian ones when they begun winning constituencies in the General Elections.

singapore ( DAP if i am not mistaken) conquered almost all the major cities in malaysia during their election. chinese are the major residents in cities.. knowing how UMNO people are.. they gave spore independents. so they can be the BOSS in malaysia instead. Whatsoever being stated in our textbooks arent the real fact actually. they are more to it...
