USB Speakers don't require sound cards right?

Try this first: Open the Start Menu, pull up the Control Panel, and click on the System icon. Click the Hardware tab, and then the Device Manager button. Scan down to the "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" group, expand it, and look for anything that could be related to sound output (ignore everything that mentions "game" or "video"). If you find something that looks like it'd be your sound card (and you can try searching the name online to verify that it's a sound card), right click and select Uninstall Hardware. Now, pull down the Action menu and select Scan For New Hardware. Whatever device you just uninstalled should immediately register as "new/uninstalled" hardware and your computer should prompt you to install the hardware. Let it, and see if that fixed your problem (I just used this trick yesterday to get the internal DVD drive on my 1.5yo laptop to work when it stopped reading discs at all).

And I wouldn't bet on USB speakers not needing sound cards. Some USB speakers are labelled as such because they use USB for the power, but still plug into the headphone jack, which is definitely controlled by the sound card (I got a pair of such speakers with my Gateway desktop computer). And there's no guarantee that sound run through the USB ports wouldn't be required to use the sound card as a pass-through controller anyways.
