A wireless NIC (Network Interface Card) either in PCI, PCIe or USB format (USB is the easiest to install because PCI and PCIe NICs must be fitted inside your machine, whereas USB is plugged into any one of the thin slots that adorn the front and/or back of your average machine).

If your broadband supplier doesn't package a wireless router with your subscription then you'll also need one of these.

For what it's worth, look to spend £10-£15 for a NIC and £20+ for a wireless router.

You'll need a wireless gateway (combination router/modem w/ wireless capability) or a wireless router that has access to a regular modem, either directly or through a primary computer.

For the computer, if it's a laptop, it'll probably have wireless-G built in. If it doesn't, you can go with any wireless-G adapter that connects through a USB port, the PC cardslot, or any CompactFlash or SD cardslot that might be included (yes, there are companies that are starting to make accessories that use flash card ports to connect, now that more computers are shipping with them built in).

For a desktop, the same options all apply, except instead of a laptop PC card (unless you want to track down an external device that can interface with them), you can get either a PCI or PCI-Express card that will install in the back of your tower to give you after-market built-in wireless capacity. However, if it's at all convenient to run Cat-5e ethernet cable, that's usually a much simpler solution for hooking any desktop up to the modem over wireless, since you won't need to be able to connect from more than one location.

In either case, the USB option is usually going to be the cheapest, and you might find that your computer has only PCI ports or only PCI-E ports available (I've got one x16 and one x4 PCI-E port available and no free PCI ports, which really limits what I can install internally). USB has the downside that since it's become so commonly used, it's always pretty easy to fill up all of your free ports. To run a wireless-G connection, you'll need to either plug it directly into the tower, or connect it to a powered hub to guarantee that it has enough juice to transmit a clear signal.

It needs to be 'Wifi' enabled. For desktop PCs this is usually done by adding a USB dongle (a device that sticks out of the USB port).

For laptops, theses are usually built in and it will still be described as Wifi Enabled.
