This is quite normal and not just between girls.
There is no sex discrimination in jealousy or competition.
It has happened throughout the ages, keep it healthy and don't go over the top.
Do not be jealous over possessions because they never last.
Jealousy over achievements is a good thing if it pushes you to achieve more.
Boyfriends, Girlfriends, Husbands and wives are not possessions, but partnerships. Be jealous of a good partnership and attempt to make one as good or better of your own, but let there not be jealousy within a partnership. In this case you should help each other to achieve the best, so that others can be jealous of you.

I don't know why but it does seem to happen even at different times in life for different reasons. Don't know your age group but imagine perhaps a teenager? In teens it can be boys, looks, brains etc. Most common after having a family is competition over childen, who has the best clothes, looks, does best at school. Family grows up and homes get refurbished can be who has the nicest home. In old age (thankfully not quite there yet) can be the petty things like if a neighbour comes home with a carrier bag from a good store there is jealousy. Even in care homes the competition goes on as in who as the most visitors etc. Sad but a fact of life. Take heart not everyone is like that but it is amazing looking on how many female friends are!!!

yes it is ... such a female thing lol.... even though you may be friends who still feel like you want to be better or be the one that's being the dominant one. In a way competition and jealousy is a way to test the strengths of friendship ... good friends won't let a competiton break them up and will just do it as a laugh and great friends will love their friends for all their success and not get jealous ...

I hate to be the odd one out but between my friends and I there is no competition or jealousy, only support, love, friendship and lots of laughter. To my mind, if you are jealous and competetive you are not really friends, you are rivals.

I hate competition between friends. It just ruins the friendship. Your friends should be HAPPY for you not jealous. And if they are then they not friends.

Yes even though friends might not admit it there is always maybe not competiton but some jealousy about one thing or another between girl friends even if it is harmless jealousy, ie i want your body type or something, i think it only really doesnt when both friends are happy with themselves and their lives and are true friends and can talk about such things.

Only if they are related but otherwise it isn't normal. Friends should be happy for each other's successes.
