what is the reason for using IAS server in 2003 server?

i came to know that IAS has using to forward the client pc to vpn connection. either its right or not

IAS works as internal proxy and firewall for the organisation,
this can work like DNS server as well

IAS is a Authentication Server. When a user tries to connect to the office network using VPN remotely from home, IAS is used to authenticate the user using the Active Direcroy User name and password.
