Shakespeare is important to study for several reasons...One, to get a better understanding of how the English language has evolved from middle English to present, Two he was a very clever writer and one can learn a lot about rhythm, rhyme, tone, etc. as well as a lot of literary devices such as metaphors, etc.
Third, his plays revolve around issues and themes that are still prevalent today such as Romeo and Juliet - young, teenage love, dealing with parents, growing up, making big decisions. In Hamlet, although we are not going to be visited by ghosts asking us to revenge his/her death we will have encounters where we have to make a tough decision and will not know the answer right away, have various family interactions and problems, etc.
Hope this helps a bit, Good luck!

The 24th century is still a loooong way away--I'm sure the world's culture will be completely different by then.
