There different dance styles in India.
In Tamilnadu it is called Bharathanatyam. Bharathamuni was the founder.
In Andhrapradesh they call it Kuchipudi. There is one village by name Kuchipudi. Sidhendrayogi was the originator.
In orissa it is called Odyssey.
In Kerala they call it Kathakali and Mohiniattam.
Like this there are several dance forms. In olden days artists used to dance in temples.
In all these dances they try to convey the union of Jivatma or soul with Paramatma or God through Nayika and Nayaka Bhava. The humans are heroins and the God is the Hero.
they depict 9 rasas like Hasya, Krodha, Ascharya, Lalitya etc.

For Bharatanatyam, I think that Indian Fine Arts, Music Academy, Natyarangam, Music Connoiseurs Club are the serious dance competitions. Maybe also BSNL-organized classical Indian dance competitions.

The origin of all Indian dance forms was in the temples of Tanjore (Tanjavur) in Tamil Nadu. It is supposed to be the first classical dance form not only in India, but in the world. From Bharatha Natyam came Mohiniaattam in Kerala, Kuchupudi in Andhra, Odissey in Orissa and the last being Kathak( Uttar Pradesh, probably of Mughal origin). However this is not to say that all these dance forms are one and the same. They all have their art, grace, beat, rhythmn and their peculiarities. For example Kuchupudi requires a brass plate on which the dancer stands and performs very difficult moves. A truly amazing feat.
The influence of bharatha natyam is not confined to India. With the Chola conquest of South East Asia under Rajendra Chola and his successors, this dance form has contributed to the cultural dances of Indonesia (Majapahit and SriVijaya empires) and modern day Bali, Cambodia (Khmer Empire) and the Kingdom of Ayyuthaya (Thailand).
