This is the way i describe my second year at the university that i went to. It is a small liberal arts college in the States. It was and probably still is in many ways, a really innovative and special school. And i don't mean a "special" school. My second year there, I belive, was their last-best year. After that, they just got too popular and started to become more mainstream. They had a lot of "best" years i think, but that year - 1987-88 - was their last. This is just my opinion. The whole atmosphere seemed to change in 1988-89 and i graduated that year. This is how i interpret that word.

It sounds like it refers to your last, best score in a game, or sporting event, or your last, best result in a particular category of statistic, like the best that you did the last time you tried. I've seen something like this on video arcade games.
52 years English speaker, father newspaper editor, so above average awareness of it.

last - best
perhaps they are speaking of saving the best for last. like in western culture the desert of a several course meal - is considerd the best best part.... the sweetest part.
or on a date or special evening with a woman, the best part happens at the end ... best for last....so often we will talk about saving the best for last.

Last best - It is not THE best but close to best.
Usually that's what it means.
It is strange someone used that word to confuse you. The most common word is second-best.

i´m guessing, that that means second best, the next to the best. that is to say, you have the best, and then what is almsot as good is the second best, or the next best. possibly this is last best.

You really need to give us a sentence so that we can see the usage in context.

There is no word 'last-best', are you sure that's what you mean?
