i have a ps3 someone gave to me as a gift i dont which region it came from by the way for selecting thing i use the o buttuon not the x for select things on ps3. so i want to update it i dont where to download the update data from america website asia website

O means 'yes' in Japan. So, I think you got the either Japan version or Asia version..
I don't know about the network update, but my PSP can update itself on US network. My PSP is from Japan. But do take note that some claim that if you update not according to your region, you have problems running your console.
