fengshui was made by the chinese to optimize yield of farmers about 4000 years ago. then this is adapted to suit the needs of the military/ politics. now, this again is adjusted to the needs of chinese people.

and some of these knowledge are handed down from parent to children. thus some of these are considered common knowledge to most chinese. why do we (chinese people) believe in it, maybe because it is part of who we are. it is part of being chinese. it is part of the chinese culture.

there are those who will say that they are christian, and that they do not practice fengshui. but we are not talking about religion or philosophy. fengshui is neither a religion nor a philosophy. it is not based on faith for it to work. it is working right now, whether you believe it or not. it is a means to achieve the things you want faster, esp if you know how to go about it.

there are many kinds of fengshui. the most common is the one most people practice - the one dealing with earth. another is about calculating destiny. for example, a chinese person knows that he has a bad destiny, or a destiny without much money. since, most chinese is about career and business. he would want to achieve it as best as he can. but if he knows fengshui, he can "cheat" his destiny and have a better life.

Everyone has their own philosophy that works for them. Chinese people (most of them) are very traditional and follow their customs. But not all of them. Feng Shui is a part of it. So some of them believe in it cause it works for them:)

Because they created it.

Actually, if you would analyze one type of feng shui, its more on the aesthetics and functionality. Example, in architectural feng shui, it discourages schools to have a flag pole in front of the main entrance because it blocks the good energy coming in. But in reality, it obstructs the entrance, especially when moving big objects in and out or the crowd of students coming in and out.
