It was racially motivated. It was thought that mexicans were sitting around all day smoking pot, not working and contributing to society. Almost all drug laws were passed for reasons like this. Cocaine for the blacks, Opium for the chinese, so on and so on. It was hoped that the mexicans, who were no longer needed as cheap labor, would move back. The same goes for the chinese. The blacks were feared to go cocaine crazy and rape white women. A lot of propaganda was spread to induce these fears. There are other reasons too, but these were the biggest contributors to the passing of these laws. And tax stamps meant nothing after they were passed. That was an effort to slow down usage and collect money. It probably will be legalized within ten years, just as soon as they can figure out how to control it. A lot of states are pushing for this. You need to join NORML or another pro-legalization organization if you feel so strongly about this.

Great Question...Everything I think of that is Bad about weed is the same in Alcohol? Alcohol should be illegal in the Goverments eyes, remember they tried to ban it, but you know how long that lasted. At least the goverment is smart enough to make it legal for medical patients that suffer from pain and nausea. Ask the ones that suffer everyday from advanced AIDS, and Cancer and Marijuana actually Helps them more than ANY other drug on the market. Marijuana is ALL Natural also. To answer your question, the Gov made it Illegal because of the state of mind it puts you in and the addictiveness to it. We really wouldn't be safe with a bunch of HIGH people doing Jobs around us or driving around us. Thats the only thing I can think of. Treat them the same, weed and alcohol, because they are similar, except weed is ALL NATURAL!!!!!!

To but it simply, NO Marijuna will never be legalized if they did it would no longer be "Cool" every real pothead would move on to harder stuff because alot of them only do it for the adreniline rush of doing something they are not suppost to "Rather or not they realize it" the whole appear of Marijuna is that its ILLEGAL is why 99% of people try it. Its why teens start to smoke cigereets becase its ILLEGAL and people get rushes off doing stuff they shouldnt or are not suppost to do. Cocain however was the only major drug that Ive seen that was completly removed from the US who in the early part of century somewhere around 80% of the people in the coountry were addicted do to its use in almost every consumer product. They tried with alcohol and caused more problems them it helped. Reguardless to popular beliefe the government does not profit from the sales or non-sales of marijuna. Look at it this way, generally the people in the government are intelligent people... they may have their own agendas in mind more so then the american people but still intelligent If they feel and say its not a good thing then who are a bunch of 30 year old drop outs who claim they have back pain at a protest rally to prove them wrong. No one can give a good answer why it should be legalized they just say it should because they like to get high. Don't beleive me attend a ralley they will scream and yell about the law and the government but never say the REAL reason why it should be legalized other then they like to get high and of course you will have the "Terminal Pain" people that claim they need it for health reasons and they are full of the sob storys let me tell you. Anyway I think I went off topic so Ill end it here :)

It was regulated just like tobacco and alcohol - you can buy narcotics stamps from your friendly local stamp dealer.. where the IRS collected taxes on it. I don't know the whole story but it had to do with things they found out about it not being safe, just like cocaine. Which also was legal and regulated.
It also may have had to do with embarrassment in a way - World War Two and Vietnam ended up creating a lot of new drug users and then all of a sudden they had a big problem on their hands, and like the government does - they don't know how to deal with anything - they just punish everyone. So something happened where they were embarrassed and then over-reacted.

The black market value of Marijuana would plummet if it were made legal. Anyone in high leadership who supports keeping marijuana illegal supports their Swiss bank accounts. Even Bush Sr. has been rumored to have "invested" heavily in the marijuana market during the Viet Nam War. Also, marijuana is an incredibly safe pharmacological agent, and inexpensive, for numerous discomforts that the pharmaceutical industry would rather not have so it readily available to replace their very toxic and expensive alternatives, such as Valium. And, there is an element of racism involved in that marijuana was seen as associated with the black jazz movement. Making marijuana illegal was an element in a campaign back then to break down the black musical artist community and discredit their art. RN

Not out of any moral or health reasons. One, taxation of it couldn't be controlled, since it could be home grown. (That's why the men closing down stills were called "revenuers;" they were government tax agents.) The prohibition was called the Marijuana Tax Act.
Also, some powerful folks were behind it, including William Randolph Hearst and Dupont, whose new company was pioneering synthetic fibers. Making marijuana illegal made hemp illegal; hemp was a major crop in the U.S. at the time, used for ropes and clothing.

smoking marijuana or actually digesting it (like in brownies) is very very bad for you. hemp is a carcinogen like tobacco x20. it is made worse by being an illegal crop so it isn't checked by the fda (which doesn't do much anyway) so it comes to you full of bacterias, fungi, and other funk that is potentially lethal.
buy a vaporizer on ebay and i will sleep better.

Because they like throwing people in jail...lol.
Marijuana has been linked to mental health problems and also increases the risk of other cancers but I'm on your side. I'm sure there are more issues with drugs like alcohol and that's legal.

If the # 1 answerer is right, it ought to be interesting to see people sentenced to prison for smoking a cigarette! I don't care if pot is good or bad for you, you can't reconcile sending people to prison to protect them from themselves as being a law made in a free country. Racism had a lot do with it to begin with, but now it's just the big brother mentality. Which is turning this country into a police state by the way.

I tried this stuff a long time ago and it made me eat more and i was very paranoid...plus it did not make me drive or operate machinery better..it only made me sleepy and lazy.
some people abuse this weed and spoil it for everyone.
But i have a friend who smokes dope a lot and he said he would stop smoking this if it was legal...is that sound right.?
this ia a mood altering plant that i believe got a bad rap as a lot of sick and hurting people could benefit from the medical uses for it.
