There are many ways dancing On 2. It is danced on a Mambo Music on an 8-beat pattern

One way is doing it like this:

Start with both of you feet together.
1.) Hold the Beat
2.) Step forward with your Left Foot
3.) Rock back onto your Right Foot
4 ) Step back with your Left Foot
5.) Hold the Beat
6.) Step back with the Right Foot
7.) Rock forward onto your Left Foot
8 ) Step forward with your Right Foot Repeat Step 1

The above steps are similar to Salsa On 1 or the LA Style.

Eddie Torres of NY Style is danced in a different pattern.

Start with both of you feet together.
1.) Step backward with your Left Foot
2.) Step with rocking motion farther backward with your Right Foot
3.) Step Forward with Left Foot
4 ) Lift your Right Foot moving forward and...
5.) Step forward with your Right Foot
6.) Step farther forward with your Left Foot
7.) Step backward with your Right Foot
8 ) Lift your Left Foot to the back and... Repeat Step 1

I danced Eddie Torres Style. Take note that Eddie Torres style's first movement is the guy is moving backward stepping with his left.

In the words of the late, great Tito Puente, who knew about these things, "Salsa is something you eat."
Mambo is danced on the clave, and it normally is heard on the 2 beat in the odd-numbered bars of music in the genre. So a basic step pattern would be danced "Quick, Quick, Slow," with the first quick step on the 2 beat , so you're stepping on 2,3 & 4, with the body action but not a weight change on the 1 beat (4/4 time). Salsa is really just a mambo variant, and the "New York" style is to keep the original timing. If you originally learned the left coast style, with the basic steps on 1, 2 & 3, you need change nothing but delay a beat, using the one beat as a prep felt in the ribcage without a step.
