I tried it..
let's see... we have these things called scripts..
in short they're a dialogue that ensures you get your product there in the most efficient and quick way before a client gets irritated and hangs up the phone on you.. These scripts cover absolutely ALL the answers you can think of that reject the product to make the person think about it again... and usually ask questions which no matter the answer will be answered by a 'great! wonderful! fantastic! now, blah blah blah...'
so it's learning all of that, and you go and sit at your cubicle and basically do it all day, or in my case I did it for an hour before I quit because it totally enraged me that I couldn't finish my sentence before hearing a "click" (people hanging up on me)
hmm... so don't really know if that helped any. good luck with the story though. You basically have to be a people person, very good with talking and persuasion which actually develops as you practice. And have to be very patient with the clients that go off topic (especially old people, they like to do that).

a telemarketer, is a person sits on the phone all day, markets stuff, and gets interests on sales he does per day.
Its a talkative job, tireless, and you get to listen to many odd people on a daily basis.
I once worked as it for 1 week and quit instantly, Ohh and the salary is Ughh ugly

I was a Telemarketer for one night and I didn't like it all, so I quit, people don't want to be disturbed during dinner, (that was my shift-the dinner shift), I got yelled at a few times, it was stressful. That is all I can help with, sorry. =)

I'm not one myself but a friend of mine was once and he told me that the worst thing in that job is that he had to answer a call, he never knew who was at the other side and when the call was over, they put him in contact with another unknown person almost directly, he didn't have any time to relax (except for the lunch).
This sounded so stressful...

I tried it a few years ago, but I wasn't much of a salesman, because they made me work sober!
So I had to find another line of work.
