The median is the number that is in the exact middle of the number of values.

There are 25 athletes walking less than 8 miles, and 20 athletes walking more than 8 miles. For x to equal the median, you want to:
a.) Find the number for x so that the number of athletes walking less than 8 miles is equal to the number of athletes walking 8 miles or more than 8 miles.
b.) Add 1 to make the total number odd (otherwise you'd have to average).
25 = 20 + x
5 = x
Add 1: x = 6 (solution!)

Check:
10 + 8 + 7 = 25
6 + 20 = 26
Makes the first person to wak 8 miles the median - check!
