I agree with the previous answers, but another thing to take into account is that the Astra is known to have water ingress problems with the rear light clusters. The drain holes in the hatchback are directly over the ligt clusters and allow water to corrode the metalwork in the light clusters, eventually causing the lights to short out. This is usually indicated by more than one light being on when the lights are active. I can't remember if there is a permanent live connection to the clusters, but if there is then I would suspect this problem. MKIII escorts have the same fault.

If you indicator arm is in the active position when the keys are out it leaves the light on as a parking light.

Sounds like the European parking lights.
Most cars, other then Mercedes, if you turn on one of your indicators (blinkers) and remove the keys, the parking lights for that side of the car are on. ie..set your left indicator and remove the key, the left side parking lights are on.
This is for streets that are dark at night or streets where the street lights turn off late at night.
