The implant contains the same hormones as the mini pill (progesterone). They cut your arm open to put the matchstick in and it hurts while it's being done. You have a plaster on it for a few days afterwards. It lasts 3 years before you need to have it removed by a trained professional. You get periods as normal on it but don't need to remember to take the pill. It has been known to have some side effects (I had complete loss of sex drive while on it) but it is a very effective contraceptive. Others to consider which are progesterone only are the Mirena IUS. It fits inside your womb for 5 years and you can just feel 2 threads inside to check it's in place. It has less side effects in my opinion and my periods stopped while I had it in. The depo provera injection has to be done every 3 months (in your bum!) but I also had no periods while on it and it was very convenient without a long term commitment. I'm now back on the mini pill after having the implant taken out which would suit you fine as long as you remember to take it within a 3 hour slot at the same time every day.

If you stop the pill you will be unprotected.
I seldom advise the implant. It is a nuisance to remove if it doesn't suit you and is a long commitment. You choose your contraception with full advice from your medical adviser. He should go through the pros's and con's of all available contraception with giving the relevance to yourself. If there were no other issues I might suggest the Mirena coil. But have further talks with GP or attend a family planning clinic which may give you more information.

Hiya love I HAVE BEEN ON THE CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANT since last Feb so I been on it 4 1 yr now so far I have only had 1 problem on it and that is that I dint come on my period and when I do its generally for about 1 month. But this is not to say that you will go on the contraceptive implant and have no problems because everyone is different. But personally I think is brilliant as you don't have to remember to take it every morning and it lasts for 3 years. If you decided to go for this then if dint like it once in yoUr arm then if you go to ur gp they will remove it from your arm

Contraceptive implants can also have their own effects. So, check with your doctor before deciding. It may be a good idea to stop the pills and insist on your male partner taking the protective steps till you are settled properly.

I have the implant and i was told to take the pill until the last day and on the first day of my cycle get the implanon put in.
And by the way, To put it in all they do is give you a needle to numb the insertion area of your arm and use the inserter to put it in (like a bigger needle). It has nothing to do with cutting your arm open or wearing a cast.

implants good, they inject a tiny plastic, hair clip size device in the top of ur arm, its dun with local anasthetic. doesnt really hurt and is reliable, 3 yrs on u have it removed and a new one placed. few side effects too. personally id continue with the pill to be safe, if it wer dangerous to take them ur gp wud have told u to stop them.

you probably should have asked your doctor about this, as if it affects your blood pressure it could also have adverse effects, please seek professional advice, you can normally call an nhs clinic and talk to someone about general medical problems like this, maybe try the nhsdirect website.
