Im about to buy a new tft 19''

I was just wondering what the advantages / disadvantages were using a widescreen tft compared to a standard square tft because they are both the same price and dont know weather to get standard or widescreen

Im just worried about using windows on a widescreen i think its going to seem a little odd at first

You should go for widescreen. Our two eyes are horizontally apart (not vertical). That's why widescreen is suitable for our sight line.

You will play better game and movies with widescreen. All theaters / cinemas are using widescreen.

It doesn't matter whether widescreen or standard size. The important thing is what will you use it for.

If you are working in desktop publishing, make sure the TFT is capable of displaying 1:1 pixels, that is 4:3 resolution (eg. 1024x768) for standard size and 16:9 resolution (eg. 1280x720) for widescreen size. Otherwise you may encounter difficulties and need more adjustments when working with graphics.

Widescreen is, of course relatively wider than standard. You may find it useful.
On the other hand, standard size is "higher" than widescreen, this makes you scroll pages less than when using widescreen. Most of us scroll pages up & down rather than left & right, so standard size makes you do less scrolling.

Of all of the above considerations, a 1:1 pixel resolution capable TFT or even desktop monitor is a must, no matter what the size of the physical screen.

You get less screen size on a (16:9 ratio) widescreen than on a (4:3 ratio) "square" screen (the square ones have more screen area, but the wide ones are a little bit wider & a lot thinner vertically). However if they are both the same price then it accords to what you do with it. If you want to watch dvd's or HD films, or play XBOX360 then get the widescreen, as that is the ratio that films & XBOX360 games are made for. Some films (anamorphic 2.35:1) are super wide, which means that they will play with small black bars on the top & bottom to fit the wide monitor, they will be a LOT better than on a square screen though. If you want more screen area for your money however, & like using Windows the way it is, then get the square (4:3 ratio) screen.

The main usage for widescreen monitors is: movie playback, and this only pays off if you're using the screen primarily for watching movies and nothing else.

But widescreen is also suited to most games and viewing applications side by side, lets say your cutting and pasting from word into another document and need both of them open, do you see?

Good luck

But NOTE:

4:3 monitors only go to 1600x1200 (2048x1536 in some extremely rare cases), while 16:10 monitors hit 1920x1200 and beyond.

Of course not everyone intends to buy a 24" LCD, but I'll just in case you'd like to know, you don't see 22+ inch 4:3 LCD monitors (of the non-TV type).

Thanks

I love using a widescreen monitor on my laptop. On my desktop PC I have two 4:3 screens side by side, which is even better.

If I had to choose only monitor it would be widescreen. It's so much easier when using two applications when you can have them side by side.

You can still watch HD/BlueRay DVDs on your 4:3, but you'll have big black bars at the top and bottom, on 16:9 you'll only have small black bars.

I, personally, would go for the widescreen.

maximum new video games have widescreen demonstrate innovations. i in my opinion choose the widescreen demonstrate, it really is more desirable to the fullscreen demonstrate. Older video games may not have widescreen innovations and could be stretched huge, although that's often not a large situation. some video demonstrate instruments actually have the alternative to demonstrate complete-demonstrate by technique of putting black edges on the left and acceptable aspects. briefly, i imagine maximum pastime enthusiasts and pc consumers may choose widescreen. It performs into our organic peripheral imaginitive and prescient.
