How about writing your own command line interpreter ala unix command shell. Your own version of "ls", "cat", aliasing, macros (#defines), piping of commands, et al.

Please provide more info about the level of programming you want. I believe any one not doing DIT, does not understand the level of it. So either please specify the syllabus/contents of programming you've been doing and the world can help! OR Atleast specify that from where are you pusuing this course, so that people have a way of finding the syllabus on web. Hope this will help you get answers quicker than now.

Try communicating with two or more PC's ... Client - Server that can be small project & later you can add more features. Do it on Linux or Unix environment for better exposure.
