Keep up your present job and then redecorate your whole house/flat. Do painted walls in some rooms and wallpaper in others. Practise painting woodwork doing it as it should, rub down, undercoat, topcoat, light rub down and another topcoat. When you think that yours is pretty good ask if you can do a friends room or two.
Now advertise in a newsagents window. Just put,Experienced Painter and Decorator and a phone number. Have an answer machine to take message as they will not call back if you are not there. Charge half the going rate which is about £120 per day. You can move the prices up gradually as you become more experienced. It is also a good way of regulating the amount of work you get. If you need more work shift down a little. Get a few jobs under your belt and offer each person you work for an M&S voucher £20 for any referral that produces a job.
Give proper written quotes on proper headed paper with name address and telephone number but not a mobile. Take out insurance against damage to customers property. You might put a ladder through a window etc. Never leave an enquiry for more than one day before contacting and give quotation within 2 days. When a date is agreed stick to it and call 1 week before start date to give customer confidence that you will turn up. I could go on but if you operate under what one would call good manners that is a good maxim.
Do all this and you will get work and it is up to you to make it work.
I changed from a Sales Director to a Painter and decorator and inside 4 weeks I was fully booked for as long as I wanted. I managed a holiday every month between April and August which included South Africa twice and other great places. I didn't make a fortune but I was a happy person and in 12 years never ever had a headache, from which I often suffered as a company director. I employed a girl to help me while she was doing a decorating course and she was great. She started on her own and did very well. She wore only skirts to work in and was, she told me, often viewed while up a ladder. A bonus for the customer.

In our modern society I would be very surprised if people wouldn't see the talent before the sex but I do appreciate your worries.

I just wanted to wish you all the best luck and hope you are the success you deserve to be.

All you need is an interesting marketing technique and actually play on the fact that you are a woman. If you think about ladies who live alone, having a female decorator would make them feel safer.

Good Luck!

Look up a company called DECORATORS DEN started by a woman many years ago, I also wanted to do this and studied to do it too, but without capital it's very hard.

Try & get a team together and all practise techniques (make Lawrence Llwellyn Bowen proud). Make a giant scrapbook of ideas and references to designs/ colours/ textures & techniques.

I still paint furniture and do murals & stuff but motherhood prevented my carrying on...GO FOR IT! I wanted to HAND PAINT wallpaper for people...! Look up William Morris (the desginer who painted & decorated anything he could get his hands on).

GOOD LUCK...let me know how you get on :)
