Some suits can be machine washed with no problem. Even when the label says Dry Clean if you use a wash for delicates there is no lasting damage done. The biggest problem is the interlinings of a suit, these help the jacket retain the shape. They are heat sensitive and will change shape at extreme temperatures. A delicate wash is a low temperature wash.
Try it out on a suit that is nearing it's life span and see if it works. After washing, hang to dry on a good hanger.
Best of luck.

You should always clean the trousers the same way the jackets are cleaned, and at the same frequency.

Washing in the washing machine tends to be a bit more harsh to the material, hence why delicate items are usually dry clean only. If you wash the trousers in the machine and dry clean the jacket, then the trousers will tend to appear a slightly lighter colour than the jacket.

Also, try and dry clean both jacket and trousers at the same time as much as you can. This is because the material will get stressed everytime you clean it, and if you dry clean your trousers more than your jacket, then the trousers will get stressed (and fade in colour, etc.) more than the jacket.

Give the same treatment to both jacket and pants i.e. dry clean both. Detergent used on your pants has a different effect to the colours than when dry cleaned.

My dad always buys two pairs of trousers(when trousers are worn more than jacket colour/fabric can change) to go with his suit jacket and has the trousers and jacket dry cleaned.

I guess you should have the trousers dry cleaned too.
