Broadly speaking, there are two kinds: verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication refers to the exchange of opinions, ideas, information, etc. between two or more people. As Richards et al. point out (1987: 48), "in an act of communication there is usually at least one speaker or sender, a message which is transmitted, and a person or persons for whom this message is intended (the receiver)". They also observe that "the study of communication is central to sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and information theory" (idem: 48).

For example, in speech act theory, everything we say can be analyzed from two points of view: locutionary and illocutionary. "Locutionary" is what is actually said (= literal meaning); "illocutionary" is what is meant (= implied meaning). For example, if I say "I'm hot", the implied meaning may be (A) I'm thirsty and want to have something to drink; (B) I want you to open the window or to turn on the air-conditioning; or I may even imply that (C) I'm tired or that I need a break. In other words, meaning can never be grasped only by what is said. What is left unsaid is probably more meaningful than what has been actually said.

Non-verbal communication means communicating by means of gestures, head and eye movements (the so-called "paralinguistic features" or "kinesics"). It also includes "proxemics", which studies "the physical distance between people". For example, in individualistic cultures, such as the American culture, people tend to maintain a certain distance (usually an arm's length) from one another. Also important is "sign language" (the language used by deaf people).

Expressing the views, thinking, etc to another in a way it is understood by the other is communication. There are various forms of communication. Each one is best suited for in each case. Generally oral communication is the best of form of communication. But there are distance barriers, etc. In Govt sector, written communication is the only accepted form of communciation. Even oral orders are to be written at the earliest opportunity. Even change of face is also a form of communication.
