try not to disturb the nest for the first couple of weeks as the mother may turn on the young and kill them if she gets upset. They will grow fur after about a week and will begin to emerge from the nest and take finely chopped solid food after about 2 weeks. They will probably be fully weaned by the end of the fourth week and can be seperated from the mother at this stage. At six weeks of age they will need to be housed seperately as they will begin to fight with eachother.
If you don't have a golden hamster, the father will lend a hand around the house, keeping the young warm and sometimes bringing them food.

Hamsters are a rodent that you can buy from ANY pet store so when you purchase them they don't have a health guarantee. Same as when they have babies. It wasn't necessarily anything you did, but rather just the hamster wasn't healthy. Just take good care of the others.
(They sometimes attack their own babies!!)

Sadly, some hamster moms will kill off their young if they don't have enough milk supply. I'd up her diet and make sure her nipples aren't red or swollen- she could have an infection.

No, stay away from them as much as possible or the mother will become nervous and eat them.
