You are a little confused I think.
A democracy (a word from the Greek language, meaning rule by the people) is a kind of government where the people living in a community or country choose who they want to be the ruler, and who will decide the laws. It's a generic term which can cover differenr types of democratic governments
In a democracy, there are elections every few years where the people can vote and choose who they want to lead them, or choose the laws. The decision is made based on the number of votes. The side with the most votes wins.
A republic is, in effect, a type of democracy which has no king, queen, or other monarch and where the people are sovereign. This means that people can choose leaders to represent them and make the laws. The word republic comes from the Latin language words res publica, which means "public thing".
Countries with a king or other monarch and free elections are called Constitutional Monarchies and they are democracies (like Britain). What makes a a republic different is that the people do not need the permission of a king or other higher power to choose leaders and the type of government they want. Laws are made and enforced in the name of the people.
The Head of State in a republic is generally a person who has been chosen by the citizens, either by direct election or by a group of elected representatives to act as the top representative of the people. In most republics, the Head of State is called the president. In some countries, the president is elected and has a lot of political power. In others, the president does not hold a lot of direct power, but is important in the legal system for other reasons.

An excellent question!
You have indeed perceived a disturbing phenomenon.
A democracy means unlimited majority rule. In essence it is mob rule.
Contrary to popular opinion the United States is NOT a democratic-republic. China and North Korea come to mind for an example of a democratic-republic.
The United States is a Constitutionally-Limited Republic. The powers of our government are not subject to mob rule but to a set of objective laws limited by the Constitution of the United States.
So why do our intellectual and political leaders hail democracy as the model of freedom around the world?
The answer: They are philosophically bankrupt.
They have accepted democracy as the answer by default. Most of our leaders today are pragmatists who will bend over backwards to appease public opinion. The American public has been intellectually disarmed by its own intellectuals.
The answer obviously needs to be covered explicitly which I am unable to do in this small space. However, I can recommend you the proper readings (fiction & nonfiction) to start to understand why our country is heading in the direction of absolute tyranny.

A republic is a type of country made up of many in dividual regions uniited under one major government. The U.S., Rome and Greece were all republics.
A republican is a person who belives in certain ways to run a country, as is a democrat. They may sound alike, but the government system and the country are two different things.
We are a republic but we have a democratic government.
Do some research, read an encyclopedia to get a better idea of all this.

Many nations prefer to have a democracy with a parliamentary type of government. The idea that is promoted is that the people have the power, not a single tyrant or tiny power elite that can't be changed. It needs to be a representative form of government which allows different groups to work together. Getting different groups of people who have hated and butchered one another to refrain from killing and to forgive enough to work together is very difficult to promote.

You aren't paying attention to the fine print. First of all, we are a Democratic Republic and that is what we have tried to set up in Iraq, except after being under a tyrant for thousands of years it is hard to get a culture to totally understand the concept. They are in the learning phase and it takes time. It doesn't happen overnight. It took us 5 years with Germany and they were civilized. And it took Japan many years as well. You just have to be patient.

I do not think that we should insist that countries be democratic. We are a representative republic. You are right if we are going to insist on anything we should insist on that. Other countries have different cultures and customs. We should respect their cultures more.

Why try to force our views on other nations at all? That doesn't seem to have done wonders for our reputation in the international community.
